UMKC has long abandoned the "ivory tower" of academe. As a result of Kansas City's Life Science Institute (KCALSI) and its initiatives, UMKC has forged new partnerships with community institutions and strengthened existing relationships to expand basic and applied research capacity. The vast majority of UMKC's faculty in the life and health sciences have formal affiliations or joint appointments with a partner institution.

Partner institutions include Children's Mercy Hospital, Truman Medical Center, Midwest Research Institute, Saint Luke's Hospital, Stowers Institute, the Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences, the VA Medical Center, the University of Kansas, and Western Missouri Mental Health Center.
